Operation: Smallville Empty Operation: Smallville

Operation: Smallville

When the Fans want to be heard

By: Gaby

Some fans campaign because they want the couple they cheer for to get together; others because they want to bring more attention to their favorite actor (asking for more episodes, for instance), others just want to show their appreciation to a show or to particular actors for the work that’s being done.

One thing is sure: They are able to make the whole world participate in their cause.

Any scene or line featured in an episode could be the start of a worldwide movement. Fans use it as a symbol, or as a theme that will make their campaign unique. It could be an oak tree, an origami, a Piggy Bank, or even an ice cream flavor (Wild Cherry). Once they got their symbol, they set the goal, and are ready to go.

Nothing is too much when they want to prove their point. They make long distance calls to stores and TV sets, they spend all night working, and using their own money for the cause they’re fighting for. Contacting the media, E!Online, TV Guide, the local newspaper, or even the one and only DC Comics when necessary.

It’s not an easy ride; they get through bumpers on the road, some of their orders get cancelled at the last minute, or lack money to fulfill their mission, but these issues don’t stop them, and they quickly find a way to solve the problem thanks to their irrevocable willingness.

Bottom line, they make a genuine effort to let Smallville’s Producers, Crew and Actors know they care about them and that they will be willing to do anything to be heard, dedicating time and money to support their cause.

Operation: Smallville Saveclana_02-150x150 Operation Picnic Under the Oak Tree was one of the first projects the Smallville fandom made, more specifically the supporters of the Clark and Lana pairing, Their fans could help in anyway they could, sending postcards, letters, or even e-mails to the WB (which broadcasted Smallville before it became the CW Network in 2006).

Their goal: let them know their ship was far from “boring” as one time the Exc. Producers Al Gough and Milles Millar referred to and asked for a better handling of the “Clana” relationship. Why they went with the “Picnic Under the Oak Tree” theme?

“Because the Oak Tree Scene was the first Clana scene as an official couple. It was the scene in which they decided to go public and tell everyone (especially Chloe) about their being together” says Melissa

Other campaigns have been made to support Clana. Lanny tells us about the recent ones like “Save Clana” that sent lots of letters to Al Gough & Miles Millar and recently during the shoot of Kristin Kreuk’s five episodes in Season 8 there was the Iris Operation in which we sent Irises to the set and a cake.

Operation: Smallville Change1-150x150 How a Piggy Bank can be the symbol of a shipper campaign?

With the motto Crack the bank! The fans of the pairing Clark and Lois took the initiative and started a campaign to support the iconic pair on 2006.

“Basically it was intended to be an organized effort to galvanize support for the Lois/Clark pairing and to let the writers/producers know that there was a very vocal fan-base out there who was interested in seeing the iconic love story told through Smallville’s perspective. Why focus on the reasons that Clark/Lana was doomed to fail? The more compelling story is why the relationship between Clark/Lois succeeds.” Says Marcy aka VisionGirl, who was one of the heads of the campaign that united Cloisers from different forums-sites to work together. All of them participated in sending postcards or emails. You were also able to participate in a Virtual Campaign.

OPB (short for Operation Piggy Bank) would not only use snail mail to make their point, but also the World Wide Web. They would use it to send “virtual coins” via email to different official accounts (Kristin Veitch (E! Online), Dawn Ostroff, head of the CW Network or DC Comics.

Why a Piggy Bank? On season’s 5th episode “Oracle” Lois and Clark had had a talk:

Lois: Look, sometimes you got to tuck your feelings away until it’s the right time - like stuffing dollars into a piggy bank for a bike you can’t quite afford.

Clark: Only, I can’t imagine there is anyone else.

Lois: You never know, Clark. Maybe when you finally crack open that piggy bank you’ll find that all this time you haven’t been saving for a bike…you’ve really been saving for a Harley.

On 2007 Cloisers were joined by the fans of Lexana, who supported the Lex Luthor and Lana Lang’s relationship.

Operation: Smallville Mod-temklogo-v2-150x150TEMK is an abbreviation for a group of fans of Tom Welling, Erica Durance, Michael Rosenbaum, and Kristin Kreuk, the portrayers of Smallville’s Clark Kent, Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, and Lana Lang. (…) It comprises of Clois and Lexana fans who care about the ethical treatment of their respective ’ships and characters and the well-being of the show while spreading good will in the process”. – This was the mission statement on their campaign website.

The Tsuru Project started in 2005 in which the goal was to send 1000 paper cranes to TPTB. It started as a Lexana wish campaign that was later joined by a Clois one. According to Japanese lore, when one makes 1000 paper cranes, his/her wish is granted. The Tsuru Project had started raising money for the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation through the purchasing of Superman tags.

These last three campaign (Oak Tree, Piggy Bank and Tsuru Project) got mentions on the Season 6th DVD, acknowledged on the “Smallville: Big Fans” segment. We can’t say that all the campaigns were listened to. Everyone didn’t get their wish granted but at least they knew that TPTB were aware of them.

Recent campaigns have surfaced like: The Tom and Erica Appreciation Project

“The Tom and Erica Appreciation Project was created to come up with a way for us fans to express our appreciation to our favorite actors. And we wanted to keep this mostly personal and fan-made rather than through a lot of shopping.

We did purchase a gift for each - a golf themed gift basket for Tom from Wickerwerx, and Cookie Lee jewelry for Erica. But the main focus of the project was creating a video where fans submitted either by text or video what exactly they loved so much about Tom and Erica. We also wanted to emphasize in our video the wide range of countries where they have fans. And then to add another gift that was more unique - we hand-made a bouquet of origami lilies for each of them” Says Daphne who contributed to the project.

Sometimes it’s not about shipping nor appreciation but asking for what they could call a fair treatment to the actors. That’s basically what the Operation Wild Cherry campaign was/is about. The fans of Lois Lane/Erica Durance asked more episodes for her since she got a limited time to 12-13 episodes per season since her arrival. They’re hoping to change this on the upcoming 9th season. Helio explains this camping to us:

Operation: Smallville Wc2-150x150The Operation: Wild Cherry Campaign launched about a week after the Lana Lang arc aired on Smallville when fan moral was very low. At the time, it was my desire to do something to refocus everyone’s negative energy into something positive. OWC managed to boost fan moral and re-energize the forum within hours of it being launched. People immediately got on board and everyone started participating in any way they could. We had members brainstorming on our main thread, giving us helpful tips and ideas, creating websites, designing graphics, setting up petitions, and advertising around the net. It was amazing how quickly and quite effortlessly everything came together. Once we realized that we had enough people interested and willing to work for this campaign we set up an easy system to receive donations. We ended up not only reaching our donation goal, but actually surpassing it, which on its own was quite an amazing feat.

From its inception, people felt very passionate about OWC, and not just because of their great affection for the character of Lois Lane and the actress Erica Durance, but also because of their desire to see the original Superman mythos treated with respect on Smallville. As much as people love the character of Clark Kent, they equally love the character of Lois Lane. It is the journey of these two destined souls, their great partnership and unrivaled romance that have kept viewers enthralled for more than 70 years.

Although Lois Lane is the second most important character in the Superman mythology and Erica Durance has done an exceptional job portraying the character for the past 5 years on Smallville, her role on the series has been limited to 12/13 episodes per season. OWC’s objective is to change that next year and finally get a full 22 episodes for this wonderful actress and iconic character.”

Why people join this kind of projects? And how they each give a bit of themselves to make the project successful?

Read what Lessie did for The Tom and Erica Appreciation Project Campaigns.

“I joined because I personally wanted to take part in a fan appreciation project that let Erica and Tom know how much we appreciated their hard work and dedication. I wanted to pour my love into it, which I did.

I donated the flowers we sent Erica, and always kept in contact with the florist to make sure what we wanted was what we were getting. They were awesome and did things just like we wanted them. Also, I donated funds to the Tom-Erica appreciation project and submitted my own responses to be included in our DVD for them.

I also phoned the SV set, letting them know of what we were doing. They were amazing in helping us out.

This was the first time I was ever involved in a project like this. And I don’t regret it. Only for Tom and Erica would I ever do this. And when we do something again for them, I more than gladly will partake in that too!

I love them both and they hold a special place in my heart. Whatever I can do to make them aware that they’re loved and appreciated, I will.”

The campaigns have been always there, and they will keep coming, the most recent:

Project: TEAM EPIC.

This title also serves as the following acronym:

Tom and Erica Appreciation Mission: Eminent Project for the Iconic Couple.

After the success of Operation Wild Cherry and the Tom & Erica Appreciation Project, fans decided to undertake another project. This time, it’s an appreciation project (for Tom and Erica) that will last throughout the year, building up, until it’s time to give it to them (towards Smallville’s finale season’s end).

“The origami and video ideas are then going to continue with the upcoming TEAM EPIC project. The plan is to send more origami bouquets throughout the year - one for each at the beginning of shooting, before the holiday break, and at the end of shooting - a different type of flower each time. We’d also like to be able to include another appreciation video with each, but that will depend on time and volunteers to create the videos” continues Daphne who also participates on this campaign.

“I think that is great when people want to declare their appreciation to their favorite actors. Besides is a good way of trying to send a message to tptb and getting a better communication between “Smallville” and the fandom. After all “Smallville” is a product and we are their clients so the feedback is always important. Of course, the Internet fandom is not representative of the fandom as a whole, but is feedback anyway” –says Celia

Did I forget any campaign? What do you think about them, did you ever participate in one?

You know the modus operandi. Leave your feedback!
