Smallville finally ends its cruel November-til-February hiatus this week with an Ollie-centric episode that reunites the Emerald Archer with a face from his dark past. And since fans are already frothing over next week’s “Absolute Justice” movie event, we figured this was the perfect time to talk to the hilarious Hartley about his character’s upcoming adventures…and possible on-screen entanglements.
So just when it looked like Oliver was finally getting back to his happy place, here comes his old mentor to mess things up? How bad does it get?
Yeah, the Dark Archer. He’s this guy from his past, and he’s sort of looking for Ollie to do something for him that he’s not cool with anymore and Oliver is like ‘Yeah, no.’ Then, at one point, arrows are flying everywhere. Lois gets hit. Chloe gets hit.
Yikes. It’s a bloodbath!
Well there’s this code. See, he was my trainer, and there was this code. “Never have any lovers, friends or allies.” So to get to me, he targets them.
And how does all of this Dark Archer stuff impact Oliver? Will we ever see him as that charming guy again?
Well…I like to think I’m always charming! [Laughs] No, I have always said let this guy be f---ed up, let him have flaws. At least he knows that about himself. And I think part of that downward spiral [he was earlier this season] was him second-guessing himself. Instead of asking questions, he just said ‘Well, this must be who I am then. I must be a loser.’ But by facing his demons, literally someone face-to-face from his past—and coming out on top—that kind of reinforces the fact that he’s not a loser. He doesn’t have to be that guy.
And it seems that all season, Chloe and Lois and even Clark have been trying to save Ollie by telling him what he is. ‘You’re a good guy, you’re a hero.” But now, with the Archer, he’s able to finally see what he isn’t.
Right! Like, were his friends just pumping him full of smoke? It’s all on Oliver’s lap…and there is a very cool little save that happens with Clark, but it’s not one of those things where his friends have to keep telling him he’s OK anymore. It’s a cool way to put an end to all of that.
Do you factor into “Warrior”?
The one Allison [Mack, Chloe] directed? I do, a little bit. There’s a pivotal scene, but it’s a little scene…I’m just glad I got to work with Allison.
How was she as a director?
She’s fun! I mean, she’s a royal pain in the ass, but aside from that, she’s terrific. [Laughs] I’ve always said that she’s a smart person, and she did a great job. People are saying it’s great. I told her ‘I’ll apologize in advance for bringing your show down a bit, but even with me in it, it’s pretty good!’ [Laughs]
You also get some fun work with her in “Absolute Justice,” right?
Yeah. It’s not like a CSI or anything, but there’s a little bit of a procedural with us as two detectives trying to figure out what’s going on, to find clues.
You realize that every time you two appear on screen together, there’s some mad chemistry, right?
Oh yeah. [Laughs]
So what can you tell me about either your upcoming relationships?
We’re working a lot together, I can tell you that. Hopefully whatever we do…that whole thing is out of my hands. That’s up to the writers and producers. But once you get the material, finding any kind of chemistry and anything interesting in that relationship [is the key] and hopefully they’ll like what’s going on. It’s not for lack of effort. I think we’ve been given good material and so far it’s been fun working with her. We’ll see what happens.
Should fans be ready to play more of the Green Arrow Drinking Game, where they take a shot for each shirtless scene in the next batch of episodes?
Um, let’s see…[Laughs] Man, I am naked so often on this show! In “Disciple,” I think you’ll be doing a couple of shots, but you might want to do half-shots, because I lost a lot of weight. I’ve been working a lot and didn’t get to the gym, so you should probably do half-shots. But the good news is you can do three or four of them. [Laughs]
Will any of your female costars be in those scenes?
Always! I’m not going to walk around naked by myself! [Laughs]
Where does Ollie fall into the Amanda Waller/Checkmate stuff?
Right now, he’s privy to all of it and he’s on the quest to figure out what they’re up to and put an end to all of it. I think he and Clark are going to start working together on that, which is cool, I always love working with Tom.
Finally, Clark and Oliver, together again!
It’s fun, isn’t it? Instead of the two of them bitching at each other, to have them actually working together? Yeah, you’ll be happy

Watch out, Lois (Erica Durance) and Clark (Tom Welling), there's a new hot Smallville couple. Justin Hartley reveals to TVGuide.com that his character Oliver will be moving on when the show returns, setting his sights on Clark's go-to gal, Chloe (Allison Mack). Hartley also discusses how Ollie feels about the Lois and Clark pairing, how his relationships will change with and whether the super-show will say farewell this year.
Smallville casting exclusive: Odessa Rae joins as DC villain
TVGuide.com: How do you feel Oliver is different in the second half of the season?
Justin Hartley: He's cleaned up a bit, he's shaving, so that's good. I'm guessing he's probably bathing as well, which is probably something new for him. He's back closer to the old Oliver that we're used to, the fun guy. There's a few demons still left in his closet that he's got to deal with. He's not depressed and dark and suicidal.
TVGuide.com: Fans really enjoy the Oliver and Chloe dynamic. Is there a chance the two of them will get together romantically?
Hartley: Yeah, I think that's in the works. I don't know how long it will last or how far they're going to go with it because we haven't shot that much yet, but that's what's going on right now.
TVGuide.com: Would you want to see him with Chloe over Lois?
Hartley: No, it's not like he prefers Lois. It's an interesting thing because he's got the love of his life in Lois, and she's happy now. It sounds so cliché, "I just want to see you happy," but I think that Oliver understands that he can't make a woman like that happy and give her what she needs. He's just not that man. What Chloe is asking for is a little bit different; it's more Oliver's speed. Not to downplay it or say it's a convenient thing, they're definitely comfortable together and they understand each other and don't have to put on a front.
TVGuide.com: Will there be any more Tess (Cassidy Freeman) and Oliver hookups?
Hartley: She threw a knife at me the other day, so yeah, we're going to be working together. I think I pissed her off again, so that's always fun. I don't know if they're going to be involved anymore. I would say no, but then at the same time who knows what Oliver's going to do? He's a dirty bird.
Smallville producer sets record straight on Chloe-Clark relationship
TVGuide.com: How will the relationships among Clark, Chloe and Oliver change in the next few episodes? Are they still at odds about the best way to deal with Zod (Callum Blue)?
Hartley: Yeah, they are in a way. In spending more time with Chloe, Oliver starts to understand Clark's way a little more. Instead of taking sides, if there were in fact three sides, Oliver has his own view. All three of them think they're the best person for the job. In working with Chloe, I learn more about why Clark looks at things the way he does, and what's wrong with both of our plans. Hopefully we come at it with a three-pronged attack.
TVGuide.com: Does Oliver get to meet Warrior Angel or reunite with Zatanna in "Warrior"? Zatanna does still owe him a wish.
Hartley: Yeah, I tried to bring that up. I was like, "Listen, I believe she owes me a wish and I believe that I know what I want to cash in on." But I don't work with either one of them. I'm barely in that episode. I'm in the very end and the scene I'm in precludes what's about to happen. It's like a teaser at the end of the episode.
TVGuide.com: What interaction will Oliver have with Zod in the coming episodes?
Hartley: It's being discussed. Of course if there's a battle between the two of them, Oliver has got to have something, a weapon; it's not a fair fight unless Oliver has some kind of weapon.
Who's returning to Smallville?
TVGuide.com: Do you feel you guys are heading into a series finale or a season finale?
Hartley: It feels like a season finale. I will say that, but I'll say immediately after that that I have no idea. I don't know. No one has said anything to me either way, but it feels like a season finale just because it seems like there's a lot more story to tell. It seems like people want us back next year.
TVGuide.com: Are you signed on for Season 10?
Hartley: Yeah, if they want me. If they want me, they can have me back.
TVGuide.com: If this is the last season, do you worry the writers may kill Oliver off?
Hartley: I don't know if they can kill him. He's alive in the comics much older than me, at least he looks older, so I don't know if they can kill him. I guess they could do whatever they wanted. They could always make him disappear either way. He doesn't live in Smallville or Metropolis, does he? All I have to say is if he's killed, it better be a good one. I don't want to go out like a chump; I want to go out in fireballs.

Justin Hartley: He's cleaned up a bit, he's shaving, so that's good. I'm guessing he's probably bathing as well, which is probably something new for him. He's back closer to the old Oliver that we're used to, the fun guy. There's a few demons still left in his closet that he's got to deal with. He's not depressed and dark and suicidal.
TVGuide.com: Fans really enjoy the Oliver and Chloe dynamic. Is there a chance the two of them will get together romantically?
Hartley: Yeah, I think that's in the works. I don't know how long it will last or how far they're going to go with it because we haven't shot that much yet, but that's what's going on right now.
TVGuide.com: Would you want to see him with Chloe over Lois?
Hartley: No, it's not like he prefers Lois. It's an interesting thing because he's got the love of his life in Lois, and she's happy now. It sounds so cliché, "I just want to see you happy," but I think that Oliver understands that he can't make a woman like that happy and give her what she needs. He's just not that man. What Chloe is asking for is a little bit different; it's more Oliver's speed. Not to downplay it or say it's a convenient thing, they're definitely comfortable together and they understand each other and don't have to put on a front.

Hartley: She threw a knife at me the other day, so yeah, we're going to be working together. I think I pissed her off again, so that's always fun. I don't know if they're going to be involved anymore. I would say no, but then at the same time who knows what Oliver's going to do? He's a dirty bird.

TVGuide.com: How will the relationships among Clark, Chloe and Oliver change in the next few episodes? Are they still at odds about the best way to deal with Zod (Callum Blue)?
Hartley: Yeah, they are in a way. In spending more time with Chloe, Oliver starts to understand Clark's way a little more. Instead of taking sides, if there were in fact three sides, Oliver has his own view. All three of them think they're the best person for the job. In working with Chloe, I learn more about why Clark looks at things the way he does, and what's wrong with both of our plans. Hopefully we come at it with a three-pronged attack.
TVGuide.com: Does Oliver get to meet Warrior Angel or reunite with Zatanna in "Warrior"? Zatanna does still owe him a wish.
Hartley: Yeah, I tried to bring that up. I was like, "Listen, I believe she owes me a wish and I believe that I know what I want to cash in on." But I don't work with either one of them. I'm barely in that episode. I'm in the very end and the scene I'm in precludes what's about to happen. It's like a teaser at the end of the episode.
TVGuide.com: What interaction will Oliver have with Zod in the coming episodes?
Hartley: It's being discussed. Of course if there's a battle between the two of them, Oliver has got to have something, a weapon; it's not a fair fight unless Oliver has some kind of weapon.
Who's returning to Smallville?
TVGuide.com: Do you feel you guys are heading into a series finale or a season finale?
Hartley: It feels like a season finale. I will say that, but I'll say immediately after that that I have no idea. I don't know. No one has said anything to me either way, but it feels like a season finale just because it seems like there's a lot more story to tell. It seems like people want us back next year.
TVGuide.com: Are you signed on for Season 10?
Hartley: Yeah, if they want me. If they want me, they can have me back.
TVGuide.com: If this is the last season, do you worry the writers may kill Oliver off?
Hartley: I don't know if they can kill him. He's alive in the comics much older than me, at least he looks older, so I don't know if they can kill him. I guess they could do whatever they wanted.
